Phi losophy A LEVEL (2170) AQA ysics QA A EVEL Specific entry requirements For you to be successful in A Level Physics you need to have achieved: five 9-5 grades at GCSE, 6 in GCSE Physics or combined science, 6 in another science GCSE and a 6 in mathematics and 5 in English. Students opting for A Level Physics are required to choose either A Level Mathematics or the two year AS Mathematics course. Content of the course The course explores physics in eight core areas with the ability to choose an optional unit to study in the second year of the A Level. A Level 1. Fields and the consequences 8. Nuclear physics Optional content Course tutorswill take intoconsideration thespecialisms within the academy and the interests of the group and decide to study one of the optional units which include: 1. Astrophysics, 10. Medical Physics, 11. Engineering physics, 12. Turning points in physics or 13. The course is assessed by three written exams that are each 2 hours long and will include multiple choice questions and short and long answer questions. • Paper 1 (85 marks) contributes 34% of the final A Level grade and tests the students on the five topics taught during the first year and periodic motion (6.1). • Paper 2 (85 marks) contributes 34% of the final A Level grade and tests thermal physics (6.2 onwards), field and consequences and nuclear physics. West Lakes Academy - Sixth Form Paper 3 (80 marks) contributes 32% of the final A Levelgradeand testsstudentsonpractical experiments that they have completed throughout the A Level and their ability to analyse data. Paper 3 will also contain questions on the optional topic. Is this course for you and where could it take you? A Level Physics is one of the most challenging academic qualifications out there but also one of the most rewarding. It is classed as a facilitating subject by Russell Group universities and is included in the English Baccalaureate award.
