History AQA A LEVEL Specific entry requirements For you to be successful in A Level History you need to have achieved at least 5 GCSE passes at grades 5-9 with a 5 or above in GCSE History. Content of the course First year of A Level Component 1: BreadthStudy: Industrialisation and the People: Britain. c1783 -1832 This option allows students to study the economic, political and social changes in this period of rapid change and development. We explore questions like: • How was Britain governed and how diddemocracy develop? • How and with what results did the economy develop and change? • How and with what results did society and social policy develop? • How important were ideas and ideology? • How important was the role of individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments? Component 2: Depth Study: The Cold War. c1945 - 1963 This option provides for the study in depth of the evolving course of international relations during an era of tension between communist and capitalist powers which threatened nuclear Armageddon. It explores concepts such as communismand anti-communism, aggression and détente and also encourages students to reflect on the power of modern military technology, what hastens confrontation and what forces promote peace in the modern world. Second year of A Level Students continue with component 1 and 2 Component 1: Industrialisation and the People: Britain. C1832 – 1885 Focusing on the Victorian period Component 2: The Cold War: c1963 – 1991 Students also undertake a personal study: Component 3: Historical Investigation Students conduct a historical investigation based on a development or issue which has been subject to different historical interpretations. The A Level course is assessed by two written exams that are each two hours 30 minutes long. The historical enquiry is worth 40 marks and is internally assessed and externally moderated. It is worth 20% of the overall marks. Is this course for you and where could it take you? A Level History is an excellent academic qualification that complements many subject combinations.
