Geography AQA A LEVEL Specific entry requirements Minimum 5 grade 9-5 GCSEs, including English and maths at grade 5. GCSE grade 5 in geography desirable, students who have not taken geography at GCSE level will be considered on an individual basis. Content of the course A Level Geography aims to provide students with a broad range of geographical knowledge and experience. It will provide you with a deep insight into the making and shaping of the world we live in, appreciate the wide diversity that exists as well as an understanding of the challenges we face. The course offers opportunities to develop enquiry skills, communication and analysis as well as being able to identify and debate issues that are of global importance. Topics studied include: • The formation of coastal landscapes and how past and future climate change has affected them, management of coasts by people • The importance of water and carbon cycles to life on earth and the factors that cause changes in these • Hazards – including tectonic and climatic hazards • Changing places – the importance of characteristics of different places and how these change over time. • Global connections – issues of migration, nationality and international conflict, issue of global commons and the protection of Antarctica • Contemporary urban environments - studies the characteristics and challenges faced by urban areas There is a greater emphasis in the new courses for fieldwork and there is a requirement to complete a minimum of four days for A Level courses. Students will also complete an independent enquiry at A Level, which forms 20% of assessment and is approximately 4000 words in length. How is the course assessed? A Level 2 exams: physical geography paper 1 and human geography paper 2. An independent investigation worth 20% this will give students an opportunity to plan and complete an individual study that most interests them. Is this course for you and where could it take you? Geography suits students who have an interest in and concern for the environment and are interested in current affairs and world development. It is a subject that is relevant to our own lives and experiences, now and in the future. Students with an enquiring mind, who enjoy finding their own answers, enjoy geography. Students who want to broaden their A Level studies to cover both ‘sciences’ and ‘humanities’ and who want to keep their options open – Geography A Level is an appropriate qualification for a very wide range of higher education, including science courses or career choices.
