As an academy, we know that reading is a key skill for all children and is fundamentally important to students accessing the full curriculum. Moreover, we realise that developing a love for reading is vitally important in preparing our students for life beyond the academy.
To help develop a love for reading within our students, I am excited to tell you that we have launched our ‘Year 7 Reading Canon’ with our Year 7s and their tutors. The term ‘Reading Canon’ refers to a body of books, narratives and other texts considered to be the most important and influential at a particular time.
Seven books have been selected as part of our Canon and students will read these in their DEAR time in tutor. The seven books are:
Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes
The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Rauf
The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson
Boy 87 by Ele Fountain
The Edge by Alan Gibbons
Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah
Once by Morris Gleitzman
These texts have been selected as they cover a wide range of topics and issues and we believe they will enrich students’ experiences beyond the classroom. Please have a chat with your son or daughter about which text they have started to read . Students will be reading this with their tutor weekly during Monday tutor time.
We will continue to update you throughout the year about each text and what our Year 7 students think about each of the texts. Please see our Facebook page and other social media platforms for regular updates on this.
Finally, we welcome parents reading these books alongside your son/daughter and would welcome parents’ thoughts on what they think.
