WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

West Lakes Academy cricket team took part in a Copeland District Inter Cricket tournament at Whitehaven School on Wednesday 16th March. The format of the competition was a Round Robin tournament.

In the first match against Whitehaven, David Houghton faced the first ball and placed it straight to the fielder at square leg for a golden duck. He walked off blaming the pre match preparation. Matthew Sempill, Jack Dickinson, Harry Whitfield, Coady Scott and Billy Grant set Whitehaven a total of 63 to win. Whitehaven fell 9 runs short of the total in an exciting encounter.

WLA's bowlers were outstanding in the second match, bowling Millom out for just 18 runs. The batting order was reversed and the tail enders quickly lost 5 wickets making the coach rue his decision as Jordan Cricket, Rhys Miller, Coady Scott, Billy Grant and Harry Whitfield all gave their wickets up cheaply. It was down to the able Jack Dickinson, Matthew Sempill and David Houghton to see WLA to victory.

The third match was identified as the key fixture as WLA faced ST Benedict's and set a modest total of 50 runs. St Benedict's thought that they had it won and did not take into account the WLA bowling attack. The disciplined bowling kept St Benedict's to 38 runs with Sempill, the pick of the bowlers.

In the final match WLA's bowlers again came out on top against St Bee's, reducing them to 38 not out. WLA finished the tournament strongly with David Houghton the best batsman by far, despite his first innings guiding WLA to victory.

This meant WLA were the deserved champions of Copeland. Well done to David Houghton, Matthew Sempill, Jack Dickinson, Harry Whitfield, Coady Scott, Billy Grant, Jordan Cricket and Rhys Miller.
