A group of Year 8 students recently attended the first ever Festival of Biology event to be held in Cumbria.
The event hosted by The University of Cumbria in association with the Royal Society of Biology aimed to open local school children’s eyes to the exciting world of biology.
Six Cumbrian school teams were given the chance to try out skills used by biologists in a real laboratory – determine different species using a scientific key and develop problem-solving skills as they responded to a real-life scenario set.
The students were given the task of identifying species of trees and they had to create their own method for classifying and organising pasta. The second task was a ‘University Challenge’ which looked at enzymes rates of reaction; the WLA team placed second in this round.
The students all enjoyed their day and hope to attend the festival again next year.
